Modernity

Era of precarity, jobs defined in scarcity.
Living on the margins until the ground swallows us whole.
Check to check’s gone day to day, we’re told “bootstraps!" pray for pay,
safety net has turned fucking drag’ and now we all might drown.
You’re one mistake from dying in the gutter.
You’re one mistake from living in a cell.
Tuition or a disease, each will bring you to your knees,
ballooning out your debt until no solace can be found.
Get laid off? Default on loan? Bank talons will foreclose homes,
and leave you in the streets where just to live is to break the law.
There's no coming back from it one false move is all you get
They leave you battered, browbeat, and bound.
They leach from you until you're in the ground.

Every dollar that's not spent is paid doubly in their blood.
Wring hands over investments, since you'll never see the outcome
Let each ailment slide further, past every point of return.
You won't own that it's murder, since you'll never see the outcome
Tell me what's the cost, when you don't feel the loss?
All that’s left is to wait.
Lay back, feel the decay.
Know that it's just your skin in the game.

Means Test

“Think you're owed a living? Feel under thumb’s press?
You just stretched beyond your means, go clean up your mess.
From a point of comfort, I'll minimize your stress.
Downsize, squander, go without. Trust that I know best.
If you think you need some more, prove you’ll die with less
Lived to see another day? Then you failed the test.
Think that you deserve it, to have your basics met?
Son you've got to earn it, and goddamn you haven't yet.
Work until your legs give out, until there's nothing left.
Labor is it's own reward, to ask for more is theft.”
Insidious metrics are cast
in service of maintaining class.
Dice are loaded, victors long set,
outcome’s noted, so come place your bets.

The only progression I see is in upholding status quo.
You sprawl right across the aisle. Clinging to civility,
and branding yourself as the future, acquiescing to every demand.
Your rhetoric is not enough.
You're belly up, submit at each turn.
Concessions: You rack them up.
It's clear that you've no interest in actual change
Won't own that you are the same,
insisting that there's difference in
barbarism that's spread with a smile.

Modern Slavery

Don't call it justice, 90 percent guilty plea their case.
Length of sentence corresponds lock step with class and race.
Cut training and higher ed, use funding as excuse.
Contract out a person’s life as labor to abuse.
5 years out, ⅔ back in.
Trawl up “undesirables” and throw them on the line.
“Value of a dollar's” taught with hour rates in dimes.
Beat a man down with batons, tell him that he's shit.
Throw him out with nothing, act shocked if he recommits.
5 years out, ⅔ back in.
Recidivism rates show that the failure is by design.
Rehab’s no priority when lives are monetized.
System’s bankrupt and corrupt, and still they let it age.
Each talk of a reform is no more than a gilded cage,
justice won't exist as long as prisons still stand.
